Report on country presentation

Report on country presentation

Every time when I move around the St Cloud State University campus I feel a sound from my heart that says “know your neighbor”. In SCSU we find an environment where we get opportunity to introduce with different country people and with their culture. We got the learning opportunity about different culture in our classroom too. Here we have to find an international student and take his interview and make a report and presentation on it. Each group consists of 3 to 5 people.

Our first group presented China and Mongolia. They described the brief history and meaning of Chinese and Mongolian flag. That able to draw others attention. We got very interesting information about Chains one child policy. Many of us didn’t know it. The presentation was good because it includes pictures. At the end of presentation our Chinese friends expressed how their accent differentiates from province to province.

Group 3 presented Japan and Korea. They told us about geography and islands of Japan and also some presented some historical evidence. We briefly informed the partition of Korea. They also include as picture.

Group 4 presented Malaysia, Indonesia. They presented the flag and country description like other groups. They include different festivals and cuisines.

Group 5 presented Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Personally I liked their presentation very much. The unique thing they did, they gave us a map of the area. And the good thing of the presentation was, when they presented the area, one of our Arab friends named Walid explained in detail. That makes us very clear about the presentation. I thing from this presentation our American friends can informed about the Muslim culture and the judicial system.

Group 6 – 7 presented different countries of Africa including Burundi, Kenya, Togo, and Ethiopia. From their presentation I personally liked the information about colony and languages. Group 6 presented a video clip local dance. That was great.

In brief each group tried to find information about other countries in their own way.

Report on Interview experience

Report on Interview experience

From the entire sections experience it goes without saying that everybody enjoyed the the interview session as a interviewer . It is very common to face little problem while interviewing. This troubles varies from different person, still few common problem arise. For an example to catch the unfamiliar terms of the culture. More or less all of us face that problem. From my experience I need to request my interviewee to tell detail about his culture. The reason is when he talked about his festivals I did not get anything. Some of classmates got the same problem. One of my classmate find some vocabulary problem. While he was taking the interview the interviewee addressed some local terms that has no English meaning. Few people find problem in ice breaking time. It is not very easy talk with an unknown person. The person who interview their friends or neighbours they didn't face much problem but people who were find international student from CIS or other international organization find the problem. Another problem arise at the time of recording interview. Some of us not able to collect tape recorder and few of us find problem while recording. Couple of interviewer delayed their interview time. Some takes it twice. Sometime it appears as a hazard to interviewee. Although we had time limits about 30 - 40 minutes but it was really tough for all of us to maintain that time limit. The reason is when and starts talking it looks odd to stop him during talking. Most of our classmates tried maintain track and figure out some very interesting topic from midst of them.

The good side of the interview was it was a practice about approaching people. When we enter our real professional life we need to work with different kind of person. That was a great practice for us.

In brief, taking an international students interview was full of fun in general. Knowing about a person as well as a culture brings a different experience to us.

I called him to ensure is that possible for him to seat a half an hour interview with me. Alon ensured me. They are few reasons for choosing Alon as my first interviewee. First of all he is my good friend since a semester. Moreover he is my neighbor. The most important thing is my personal interest about Nepal pushed me to select a Nepalese as an interviewee. I invited him for a tea party in my home on March 13. I took his interviewee during this time.

Execution

Way to proceed

As we already know each other and have good friendship so our conversation was livelier. That helps me to get in to depth of topic. After warm up question I started formal approach and started about his family and early life. That includes his parents , siblings, birthplace, friends, relatives and school. The reason is each and every person love his own family, friends and early life want to inform other about them. Sometime it makes people happy. It is a tricky topic to bring him in the ground. Later on I bring other topics one by one that relates to the previous topic. For an example when he starts about his childhood , he talked about his festival. What he did in the festival with his family, then I broad this topic by asking the norm , culture and festival. I tried to make a connection between each topic and try to make him more comfortable.

Our first topic of discussion was about his family and early life. That time I just played a role of an audience. During this time he told me about his home, family and relatives. Later on he told me one true story in his childhood that related to their custom. After that I got a chance to move to their custom. I informed about their main customs that has several parts . Like Birth, death , marriage and religious custom. Then I requested himself to tell something about religion group and festivals. That was the primary part of the interview. One thing need to mention when I talked about the culture the language topic raise. Up to this point everything was totally unknown to me, that am why I did not interrupt or make more topics from that.
On the second part of the interview was about country, politics, and government and education system. I found myself most involved there. I know little about their government system that’s why I asked him few questions in depth like what is the problem and benefits of their government system. And we spend much time on political issues. That time we also talked the education system , courtiers most valuable assets, way of earning I was amazed when I informed Nepal was never been colonized by foreign power.
I asked him about his personal evaluation about his countries current situation . What his dream about his country , what change they need what is the way to step forward.
The last part of the interview was the most common topic US life. Although I am also an international student but experience varies from people to people . Our main topic of discussion was how US culture different from Nepali culture and how he adjusts with it.
When I looked at my watch it says it is near 45 minutes and we have to stop. I thanked him for his cooperation and wraped up the interview.

Report on Nepal

Nepal is called daughter of Himalayan (Mount Everest), situated in the Southeast Asia. Nepal is famous for its natural beauty. Its natural beauty gives it honor of the most beautiful country of the world.
Independence
Nepal is a sovereign nation since its formation in 1823 AD. It has never been occupied or colonized by foreign power.

Culture, tradition and language
Nepal is a country of highly diverse and rich geography, culture, and religions. Nepal is the ‘Land of Festivals’ with at least one part of the kingdom celebrating a festival every day of the year. Festivals may be linked with the memory of the departed soul, to herald a different season, to mark the beginning or end of the agricultural cycle, to mark national events or for family celebrations etc... On a festival day the Nepalese take their ritual bath, worship different gods and goddesses, visit the temple, observe fasting and undertake feasting. The most important aspect of Nepalese culture is the religious harmony and that is why understanding prevailing among the Hindus and Buddhists. The main customs are: Nawrana (ritual performed on the 11th day after birth), Brathabandana (pass to marriage and perform ceremonies after the death of parents), Marriage (love/arrange), Death (cremation done by the eldest son). Apart from these major customs, they celebrate Hindu festivals such as Dashain and Tihar, birth of Krishna etc.
Most of the Nepalese speaks Nepali. There are 126 listed languages depending on ethnicity

Religion
Nepal is famous, as the world's only Hindu Kingdom. However, it is an intricate and beautiful tapestry formed by the interweaving of Hinduism, Buddhism and other beliefs. Religious tolerance and harmony such as is found in Nepal, is perhaps a unique example to the world.

Government system
Recently Nepal changed as a republic country from the age old tradition of monarchy. Now President and Prime minister as that in Indai, where the government is led by the PM while President is the figure head. It is a parliamentary form. However, Constituent assembly (who was given the task of writing new constitution) is also supposed to work as the parliament and get on with the proceedings of a functional government.

Transcript

How you grown up your family or tell me about your family life??
My family is a middle class family in Nepal. My father is in Republic of Ireland whose remittance kept us going. My schooling (till Grade 10) has been in one of the best school of the region in Nepal, my intermediate was from a renowned school in the country, and I got me bachelor’s degree from arguably the best educational intuition in the country. Though I did not have a lot of money, I had enough to participate in school/college activities, get food with my friends outside home. I was taught to love our youngers and respect our elders. My parents did their best in grooming me and my three younger sisters.

· - What are the main custom of your culture?
The main customs are: Nawrana (ritual performed on the 11th day after birth), Brathabandana (pass to marriage and perform ceremonies after the death of parents), Marriage (love/arrange), Death (cremation done by the eldest son). Apart from these major customs, we celebrate Hindu festivals such as Dashain and Tihar, birth of Krishna etc.

· - Tell something about religion group?
I am a Hindu, however I don’t follow most of the rituals as that of a traditional society, moreover I am unaware about the religious scriptures and other values of traditional Hindus. Sometimes I feel that I am agnostic, because I have a lot of doubt about the existence of God (I mean Absolute God). My family is also Hindu, but they are not conservative though ritualistic. But we all respect all religion.

· - What kind of government system in your country?
At the moment, we have President and Prime minister as that in Indai, where the government is led by the PM while President is the figure head. It is a parliamentary form. However, our Constituent assembly (who were given the task of writing new constitution) are also supposed to work as the parliament and get on with the proceedings of a functional government.
·
- What are the main sources of income or asset you have?
The main source of income is remittance for our family. We have a home and small plot of land as an asset. My father supports us from Ireland and my sister from Australia.
· - What is your state language? Do all people speak the same language? If not how many language you have?
Our state language is Nepali. However, not all people speak Nepali fluently. There are around 126 listed languages spoken in the country depending upon caste or ethnicity etc.
·
- Tell something about your independence?
We are a sovereign nation since its formation in 1823 AD. We have never been occupied or colonized by foreign power.
· - What is the famous thing in your country?
Mount Everest, Gautam Buddha, Gorkhali/Nepali warriors (who fought against British East India Company and China, and who took part in World Wars, and is enlisted in British and Indian Army). We are also famous for Sherpa, people who lived in the mountain region and assist trekkers or mountain climbers with guidance, and carry their loads. Also, natural beauty attracts thousands of tourists every year.
·
- How you differentiate your way of living and US life style?
Pull factors such better opportunities in terms of higher education, better work, higher income, be a part of the world’s center stage, tendency of youths and olds back home to go abroad, capability to travel the world if one can be a legal immigrant in USA, better chance of working in big non-profit organization and travel the world helping the world population, empowered being a part of USA (recognition). The push factors to leave Nepal were conflict among various political parties in Nepal, frequents strikes crippling the normal life, economy, education, etc. We have banking system of education rather than applied and creative. Moreover, we are at the periphery of the world’s stage with limited opportunities to experience world places, minimal income, lack of recognition at the world’s center stage has forced me to come to USA. However, I love my country.

· - What type of change you thing that is necessary for your country?
Integration of accountability and vision in the political practices, attitudinal changes people from fatalistic or submissive approach to optimistic and positive approach, accessibility of education to the grassroots, the education system must change from ‘banking system’ to exploring creativity and applicability.
·
- Tell something about your education system
Our education system is “Banking System” i.e. teachers reads and explains from text books, students listen to it and without verifying accepts it or memorizesit. Then they puke the same during exam.
We have “PABSON” and “NPABSON” monitoring primary to secondary level, “HSEB” monitoring intermediate level, and then there are Universities. However, we are in dire need for reforms in education. In fact I believe that we should do away with the existing system and work on to establish a comprehensive new one.
·
- What is the recent big achievement in your country?
. We had a Constituent Assembly election after the Maoist (who were waging war against government since 1996) came to mainstream politics with peace agreement with the mainstream political parties. Then we became republic in by changing from the age old tradition of monarchy

A crash course in American culture

A crash course in American culture

It is very time for any person to adjust with a new country, new culture. Unfortunately I am the person who tastes that experience. When I was in my home country come to America was my dream. One day my dream comes true and I arrived the country of most prosperity. The way I thought American life was not so easy. Adopting American culture is a struggling thing to me.

I found a group of people who are my coworker and friends give me direction to the way to adjust with the culture. I started my first struggle with human behavior. It is really difficult to understand people emotion in a new place. I tried to analyze my roommate Adri and tried to understand his emotion and way of react. I believed that if I don’t understand human behavior in a particular culture it is not possible to adjust with the culture. Later on after starting school that in another world to me. Different education system, different type of classmates, exam styles makes me frustrated; I shared my problems with one of my professor. She introduced me with a group of in my class. They showed me the way to study here. I also got tutors help to get academic success.

I paid much attention in my daily and social life. I found that every person in US are self dependable .That gave me a great lesson to how to struggle. I realized that when I was looking for a job. I thing that is the most important lesson in my US life.

I know America is the country of prosperity and development but I want to go back my home country, Bangladesh... The lessons I learned and learning from my US life I will try to implement in my home country where I will start my new life.

Appearence of Journalism and democracy

In order to understand the relationship between democracy and journalism we have to understand three common classification and defects. American journalism is not a single thing. Its branches makes it more complicated. Journalism varies because of group of people. Different ethnic, cultural and religion groups has their own community and their tastes of news varies from group to group. As a result they have their own newspaper. The traditional newspapers and television media is not actually the representative of journalism. This is the age of globalization . The whole maintain a connection. as a result journalism changes its forms. Newspapers and television channels now focus on the international affairs, what happening around us and tried to present a true picture.

Models of journalism in western world consists of three types of journalism. First one is the liberal model. Liberal model basically have three characteristics. One characteristic of liberal model is commercial newspaper take place of other media sources. Here the great thing is that when commercial newspaper take place it displace the newspaper related with different social and political groups. as a result they can focus more to the international affair. Second one is government interruption is less than any other system. Once US government tried to tried to limit the activities of newspaper in their own boundary. Liberal model broke it and focus to the whole world. The third and last character is to establish a strong form of journalistic professionalism.

Second model is polarist pluralized model. a significant different media system appears in Mediterranean countries of Europe. Commercial and market oriented media established near the end of twentith century. State played a vital role to control media in southern Europe because political parralism is high in southern Europe. Newspapers and media takes place in favour of different political parties. It involved more politically rather than news presentation.

The third and last model of journalism is the democratic corporatist model. The model is influenced by liberal model. These model also demands the freedom of press. when commercial media industry grew up they made a link with political groups but their intention was not to make money. The tried to figure out the true scenario in front of people.

These three type of journalism appears as a demand of time. more or less all they are linked with political parties or sometimes they got influenced by politics. Political culture varies from place to place but European media industry put less emphasis on politics. Their concentration was commercialization and trade.

Peer Correction 1
I asked my grandfather about the object and reason behind still keeping in box well sill.

Peer Correction 2
My grandfather told that these object had a great meaning for him. The reason is they remind him his adventure when he was young.

Peer Correction 3
600 hundreds years ago an empire ruled the ancient China of Ming Dynasty called Lun Luo who had a rock stamp with his name on it.

Peer Correction 4
At first, she could not see where her family had gone. She got signal from the other side of the massive old-fashioned TV set; she could see a light piercing through the room.

Peer Correction 5
Why do people get dreams when they sleep? I had this doubt when I was young. Then I asked my grandfather about this doubt. He told me that,"people get dreams because mind just can’t blank."

Peer Correction 6

A mother and father decided they needed a break. Thts why they wanted to head out for a night on the town but they worried about their son. So they called their most trusted housekeeper to care about their son. When the housekeeper arrived, the three children were already fast asleep in the bed. An art exhibition (News Paper article version)

An art exhibition

An historical art exhibition held on January 10 at Minneapolis art museum. The main theme of that exhibition was to present some ancient piece of art work to art history loving people. There is no confusion that historical evidence attracted us very much and if it is very old one then it get more importance. All those items were very unique. Some of them are hundreds year old. All these items gives some idea about the lifestyle of that time.

The exhibition starts from 10 am and continued till 9 pm. That was a nice gathering of art loving people. There was a discussion corner where people can express their opinion about the exhibition. A French artist expressed his opinion about abot a piece of clothes,"When I first saw it it seems like a simple souvenir to me, my confusion broke when our guide showed us the piece of clothes and told its age. It was about hundred years old. That makes me curious." There was a beautiful wallet that was really attractive. The wallet came from Mongolia. Its beautiful art work proves that once it was used by wealthy people. There was another small sculpture of a moving person. It appears as a symbol of a hurry person who is very busy with his activities. May be it was sign of hardworking people. There was a small black sculpture of a women. The way she standing is similar to pray or wish or some other religious activity. From this sculpture we make a guess that this sculpture may be come from Indian subcontinent. There was a beautiful souvenirs of a boat without sail that indicate the way of transportation in the early rural life. May be it indicates that rural civilization. The most important thing is coin. Couple of coins indicates the development of human civilization and their economic development. Not only these few items over there. There was a beautiful musk that shows the efficiency of art work of earliest generation people.A ruler also caught peoples attention. It seems not too old to me. If it is too old or more than Hundred years of age , we must have to appreciate this invention. We may think a ruler is very simple thing so why we give much credit for it? Reason is ruler is the milestone of measuring . If it not invented on that time we never get such smooth way of measuring today. There are also some evidence that gives us idea about social life.A souvenir of a house displayed. We get a idea of the house look like.We found a small jar that may be used for keeping water . That also indicate social life. All these items gives a idea about the lifestyle of early time.Although it was not a lifestyle of any specific region that helps to find our origin.

Each civilization has there own culture and way of life. Although it is history now but once it was the best creation the age. As time passed we become familiar with modern invention the old one remains in our memory. We should always remember that present never exist without past and these type of exhibition will help people to find his root.
